Enterprise LIMS Upgrade and Security Architecture

Figure 1: Parallel Deployment Strategy – Staging the v12.8 environment with integrated security protocols prior to the live cutover.

The Downtime Dilemma

When a high-throughput enterprise laboratory needs to modernize its digital architecture, the greatest risk is not the software—it is the operational downtime. The client was operating on a legacy architecture that presented critical security vulnerabilities and lacked modern authentication. The enterprise IT steering committee mandated an immediate shift to a zero-trust architecture. However, traditional “rip and replace” upgrade models would halt 24/7 sample processing for days.

The Architecture Solution

Instead of a disruptive in-place upgrade, NRV engineered a parallel deployment strategy. We architected the migration to STARLIMS Technology Platform v12.8 alongside the upgrade of the SDMS to v12.4. By cloning the production database, we integrated the new security layers in a staging environment, ensuring complete synchronization between structured LIMS data and unstructured files before cutover.

Enterprise Security Integration

To satisfy the CIO’s zero-trust mandate, we completely overhauled the authentication layer during the upgrade path.

  • Authentication Standard: OAuth 2.0 Security Protocols
  • User Access: Organization-wide Single Sign-On (SSO)
  • Compliance: Deprecation of Legacy Login Methods
  • Result: Frictionless Access with Centralized IT Control
Zero Operational Downtime
100% Zero-Trust Compliance
Rapid User Adoption via SSO
